Overview

Seven minutes against two and a half: Girl Unit's 'Wut', the longest cut in this Crate Diggers, sits alongside 'BALLY ON' by AM, Xten and Skengdo, the shortest. And the gap isn't just about runtime. 'Wut' was Girl Unit's breakout single on Night Slugs back in 2010 — hailed as single of the year before it even dropped — all monumental claps and euphoric organs; 'BALLY ON' is a dry 141 BPM punch that lands and leaves in 2:24. Between those two poles unfolds a selection that treats 140 as contested territory rather than a closed genre.

Tempo is the second contrast, and it's a mirage. On paper the range runs from 68 to 148 BPM, yet ten cuts sit notated between 68 and 73: Alix Perez's 'Last Rites' or Kryptic Minds' 'The Talisman' pulse exactly like the 140s around them, just written half-time. The genuine detours lie elsewhere: 'Doors Of Perception' at 87, JaFU's 'Trippin Arps' at 105 and the double 94 BPM closer from Mystic State and Gunnar Nash, where the list finally slips off the grid.

Voices against the void

The decisive axis pits the word against space. On one side, vocal artillery with pedigree: The Bug's 'Jah War' with Flowdan, in the rework Loefah cut for Ninja Tune in 2007, and 'Topper Top', the anthem Sir Spyro released on Deep Medi in 2016 with Teddy Bruckshot, Lady Chann and Killa P — catchy enough to spawn a Kahn & Neek remix and a chain of bootlegs. The credits draw sides too: Tempa signs four tracks; Deep Medi, Wheel & Deal and Deep Dark & Dangerous three each; and only Alix Perez, Truth and Reece Rosé appear twice. With nearly two out of three cuts in a minor key, the scale tips toward the shadows, and the majors — Zomby's 'Spliff Dub' twisted into E major by Rustie — work as cracks of light. A chart that isn't after coherence but friction: that's precisely its charm.
