Eight of the ten cuts on 'Origins V1' breathe between 120 and 126 BPM, and that narrow band defines the record's character: no abrupt steps here, just swell. Sean McClellan opens with 'Consciousness' at 122, a major-key slice of tech house that works as a friendly doorway, and Downgrooves' 'Foundation' climbs just two beats while darkening the mood toward F minor. That nod carries more weight than it seems: Downgrooves —the Texas duo of Mario Perez and Eric J Rydberg— signed Soundscapes Digital's very first release back in November 2013, and more than a decade later they are laying foundations again, title included.
The first valley arrives in third position: Jairus Miller's remix of 'Origin Unknown' drops to 120, the lowest point of the record's main body, before 'Gulfcoast' (125) and 'Eastern Echoes' (123) rebuild the slope with old-school progressive patience.
The peak bears the parent project's name
At track six the map cracks: Source Of Gravity's 'Futuristic Visions' fires the tempo up to 138, thirteen beats above anything else here. And it is no intruder: Soundscapes Digital launched in fall 2013 as an affiliate label to the Source Of Gravity project, based in the Isle of Man, so the surge comes precisely from the founding name. The descent afterwards is well managed: 'Burning for You' holds 125, 'Strange Feeling' —at 10:24 the longest cut— stretches 126 into a major key, and Sasha Le Monnier's remix of 'The Muse' eases off to 123 to set up the exit.
The closer is the other anomaly: 'Orion', by Chris Sterio —label manager and host of its Proton Radio show—, sits at 65 BPM, exactly half of a hypothetical 130. Heard as a half-time epilogue or as a genuine comedown, it serves the same purpose: turning the lights off without slamming the door. Sequenced as it stands, 'Origins V1' is a three-act set: plateau, eruption, exhale.
