With VA – Timeless Classics Vol. 1, Christian Smith's label doesn't simply compile pieces from the past — it constructs a sonic argument for the enduring relevance of a sound that never truly aged. Ten tracks selected with surgical precision, all hovering in the 124–126 BPM range, where techno breathes deeply and narrative space is everything.

The compilation opens with Rob Hes and «The Solution», a track that unfolds layers of analogue synthesis with admirable patience, allowing the groove to settle before releasing any melodic element. Marc Marzenit follows with «Perron», one of his most refined pieces, where rhythmic architecture coexists with ambient textures that evoke the finest dark techno from Berlin. Rodriguez Jr.'s remix of Marc Romboy's «The Overture» is an absolute gem: it transforms the original into a journey of living synthesizers, full of modulations and that distinctive sensitivity the French producer imprints on every production.

Ian O'Donovan slightly raises the pulse with «Millennia» (126 BPM), injecting urgency without sacrificing depth. Eric Sneo contributes «Metanoia», perhaps the most functional cut of the set, engineered for the peak moment of a DJ set. Guy J delivers with «Mercury» one of the most contemplative points: eight and a half minutes of hypnotic techno where elements appear and disappear as if the dancefloor were a horizon.

Remixes That Elevate the Whole

The second half confirms the weight of the names involved. Christian Smith's Hypno remix of Dave Angel's «Homage» is a statement of intent: techno reduced to its most hypnotic essence. 2pole delivers «Tronica», a track with its own strong identity and synthesizer phrases that hook from the very first bar. Sebastien Leger's remix of Christian Smith's «Tower» is arguably the most dramatic moment on the record — nearly ten minutes of tension and release, perfectly calibrated.

The closing piece is nothing short of monumental: Christian Smith's remix of Carl Craig's «At Les», running at 94 BPM, an unexpected shift that functions as a cinematic epilogue. The tempo reduction transforms the material into something almost ambient-techno, with layers slowly stacking until they create an emotional density that is hard to replicate. A brilliant way to close a volume that clearly promises a sequel.
