Thirteen of the sixteen cuts on 'Natural Born Disco Lovers, Vol.01' sit in minor keys. For a nu disco compilation — a genre that presumes celebration — that is a statement of intent: here the euphoria is built out of melancholy, that bittersweet residue the style inherited from seventies disco. The opener sets the tone: 'My Sunshine' by Lup Ino, in D minor and at 4:29 the shortest cut of the set, works almost as a prelude before A minor, E minor, B-flat minor and E-flat minor line up behind it. The landscape is nocturnal, even though the tempo, locked between 118 and 125 BPM, never stops pushing the body.
Three islands in major
Amid that half-light, three cuts break toward brightness, and their placement hardly feels accidental:
- 'You Make Me Feel So Good' by Disco Milieu (E major) lands almost at the record's midpoint and lives up to its title: the first ray of sun.
- 'Talk' by Jack Matter (F major) is also the slowest track at 118 BPM — the brightest moment and the most laid-back one coincide.
- 'Your Lover' by Paul Parsons (B major) closes the journey and is the only cut tagged as funky house: resolution arrives in a major key and with a shift of register, a proper happy ending.
Durations add contour to the map. 'Sweet Melody' by Hotmood — a prolific Mexican producer whose work circulates in DJ sets the world over — is the longest piece at 6:50 and opens the record's final third. Close behind sits 'My Pleasure' by Andy Bach, 6:44 and the fastest tempo of the set at 125 BPM. The lone remix comes from Demarkus Lewis, the Dallas-based Texan with over 1,500 published tracks, who steers 'Take Me Far Away' by Leg Warmers into A-flat minor, one of the darkest regions on the map. There are symmetries, too, that suggest careful sequencing: the opening D minor returns in 'This Feelin'' by Mark Whites, and the A minor of track two comes back in the penultimate 'Special' by Ken@Work. The record breathes in tonal circles before finally resolving into B major. Few compilations draw such a legible emotional arc without saying a word.
