Thirty-four of these forty-six cuts live in minor keys. That figure, before any big name, draws the record's emotional landscape: danceable melancholy, the dancefloor saudade Ibiza has practised for decades. The opener states it plainly: Mystic Bill's 'U Won't C Me', nearly eight minutes in A minor at 120 BPM. And the closer resolves the tension at the opposite end: 'Edge of Desire' by Jonas Blue and Malive, G major, just over four minutes. From chiaroscuro to full daylight.

A geography of durations

The map can also be read on the clock. The first third takes its time: Dam Swindle's 'Hey Mister', 'It's You' in Ron Basejam's remix and 'Midnight Love' in Larse's full-moon rework —one of the few stops in C major, a clearing in the woods— all run past seven and a half minutes: deep house that unfolds slowly. The longest piece waits at the halfway point: Hardsoul and Ron Carroll's 'Back Together' in its Copyright Vocal Edit, 9:22 of vocal house in E minor. Towards the end the durations compress —'So High' by Mele, Wonky Logic and Jords makes its point in 3:35— and the record flickers in bursts, like a night running out.

There are tonal microclimates: D minor shows up five times, from the deep shades of 'When U Go' in MoBlack's hands to the push of Emanuel Satie's 'Give It All'; B-flat major holds the brightest moments, including Starr Traxx's edit of Equation's 'I'll Say A Prayer 4 U', a revived house classic and the set's only nu disco cut. The genres trace the same relief: nine deep house and five tech house cuts flank a core of house plain and simple.
