There is a moment on 'Atmospheric Creations Vol. 6' where harmony does the scriptwriting: 'Fiction' by Talal Bazzi turns in B-flat minor, and 'Reality' by Henson and Mike Gannu answers in D-flat major, its exact relative key. From fiction to reality there is no leap — the same notes lit differently — and that pivot captures how this Variety Music volume breathes.
With the tempo locked between 120 and 126 BPM, the story is told by colour rather than speed. Ten of the fourteen cuts sit in major keys: for something billed as atmospheric, the record chooses light over gloom. Only four minors run through it, and two share a centre — the A minor of 'Sweet Conversation' returns in 'Ultra', the same wound told twice. There is also a measurable colour shift: the first five tracks never touch a flat (D, C, A minor, E, G), but from 'You Left Me' (G-flat minor) onwards the flats move in and end up claiming the finale, with 'Brother' in A-flat and 'Wilderness' in E-flat. An early nod to relative keys sets that reading up: Carl Higson's 'Deepest Symphony', the slowest at 120, flows from C major into the A minor of 'Sweet Conversation'.
'Ultra', the record's deep end
Everything else runs between 5:32 and 7:56; Talal's 'Ultra' stretches to 11:03. It is the emotional centre of gravity, the one time the compilation truly lets itself sink. Around it orbit two names with mileage: Dizharmonia, the Athens duo of Sotiris and Sokratis with releases on Steyoyoke and Stil vor Talent, sign 'Evros', the set's shortest cut, in D major; and Tom Pooks, a southern-France veteran with music on Ovum, Intec and Kompakt and founder of the Family Piknik festival in Montpellier, brings the major-key warmth of 'Brother' alongside Cadillac Express.
Genre follows the tonal map: two progressive house cuts open the set, 'Reality' adds the lone indie dance detour right at the relative-key pivot, and melodic house & techno carries the rest until Dilby and Oliver Wickham's 'Wilderness' closes in E-flat major. Atmosphere, here, doesn't mean fog — it means graded light.
