Overview

On paper, this selection reads like a faulty ECG: 37 cuts leaping from 65 to 164 BPM with no warning. The key sits in Tywi's double entry: 'Reality Checkpoint' shows up twice, the original clocked at 138 and the Maruwa remix at 70. Same pulse, written at half meter — a reading that defuses the apparent chaos and invites you to hear most of the low figures (65, 67, 70, 72, 75, 80) as half-time notations that, doubled, land right in the record's core lane between 130 and 145.

One valley, one plateau, two peaks

Read that way, the material sorts itself out. The valley belongs to 'Perception (2023 Remaster)' by Solar Fields, alias of Swedish composer Magnus Birgersson, an ambient reference since the late nineties: 11:22 gliding at 120 BPM, the longest cut of the lot and a perfect floor for opening a session or catching breath mid-night. Next to it, the ten minutes of 'Escitalotrance' by Ovnimoon and Hedustma at 130 form the ramp into the central plateau, where most of the record lives: Remotif, Alex Kassian, Rees or Gabriola between 130 and 138, cruise-speed hypnosis with no jolts.

From there, two peaks. The first at 144-145, with Omformer's 'Mercury', Alpha Tracks' 'Freedive' and 'Pattern Propulsion', which opens the list already running hot. The second at 152, with Tomo, Hydragen and I.E's false ending, before the only real outlier: Bliss Inc's 'Untitled 131' at 164, the absolute ceiling of the selection. A tasty detail: Bliss Inc also signs 'Higher, Vision', notated at 67; nobody else spans both extremes of the sheet.

The repeated labels sketch the curatorial hand too: Platipus appears twice, with Torsten Fassbender and with Art Of Trance, the project of Simon Berry, who founded the London imprint in 1993. That lineage sitting next to material from Craigie Knowes or Kalahari Oyster Cult sums up the spirit of Crate Diggers, Beatport's series for rescuing tracks that slipped under the radar: here the tempo disorder isn't a flaw, it's the dig map.
