Behind Atmos stands a very specific name: Tomasz Balicki, Polish-born, Sweden-based, active since 1998 and one of the producers who — alongside Vibrasphere, Human Blue and Noma — pushed psychedelic trance toward its progressive strain in the early 2000s. The man behind 'Headcleaner' (2000) and 'Overlap' (2001) returns with an openly conceptual album: according to the notes for the vinyl edition, 'The Bigger Picture' grew out of unearthing forgotten 90s goa material and re-producing it as if it had spent decades waiting for the right tools and the right mindset. Not retro, not nostalgic, but reimagined, the text promises — and the tracklist backs it up.
The weight rests almost entirely on Balicki: seven of the eight cuts are his own originals, and the eighth carries his fingerprints too, since 'Imagination' is an Antinomy track run through his hands as a 138 BPM remix. It is the record's only guest name, folded seamlessly into the dancefloor block: 'Elastic Above Coral' and 'Two Pole Taurus' share those same 138, while 'Full Stop Punctuation' opens the journey with the longest cut — nine minutes flat at 134 BPM in F major.
There is another Atmos inside this record: the one who drops the pulse to 90-102 BPM on 'Time Well Spent', 'The Infinite' and 'Everglade', three breathing spaces that account for nearly a third of the running time. It hardly seems accidental that two of them — plus 'Elastic Above Coral' — share Ab major: the album keeps circling back to that tonal center like someone returning home. Closing with 'Everglade', at 102 BPM and once again in that key, says plenty about the author's priorities: landing, not exploding.
Iboga Records, the Danish house behind the release, is also putting it out as a double 180-gram vinyl, a format that suits the project's archaeological premise. In the end the title reads as a statement: the full picture of a producer looking back at the nineties with today's tools and judgment.
