Crate Diggers 2026: Psy-Trance

Overview

Five of the thirty-six cuts in this dig carry the Nano Records stamp; none of the other twenty-four labels present gets past three. That imbalance is the key to reading it: more than a track selection, this 'Crate Diggers' draws a map of psy-trance's label ecosystem, hierarchies included.

Cape Town and Copenhagen

The dominant house has operated out of Cape Town since the early 2000s, run by brothers Gareth and Regan Tacon alongside Anselm Guise and linked to Origin Festival. Its line between full-on and progressive shows up untouched: four of its five entries roll between 144 and 148 BPM, from the Killerwatts remix of 'Galactic Mantra' that opens the set to James West's 'Blur The Lines'; the exception is Tongue & Groove's rework of Ace Ventura's 'Going Back', pitched at a very different pulse.

The counterweight comes from Copenhagen. Iboga Records, founded in 1996 by DJs Emok and Banel and Beatport's Label of the Month in August 2025, places three cuts that breathe its Scandinavian progressive school: Sphera's 'Too Soon', The Freak Show & Solarix's take on Lish and Oood's 'Sub Moraine' all move between 121 and 139 BPM, consistently below the South African block.

Among the labels that repeat, the identity signals get even more literal:

• Iono Music shows up twice, both times with One Function: 'The Ritual' on his own and 'Reality Pending' alongside SOME1.
• TesseracTstudio mirrors the pattern with Ectima, present on 'Integrathron' and on 'The Claymore' shared with Talpa.
• Shamanic Tales bets on scale: Out of Orbit's 'Scorpion' is the longest cut of the lot at 9:23.

The rest leave a single postcard each: Tip Records surfaces with Hallucinogen and SuperModule on 'Kaleidosonic', Zenon with Florian MSK's 'Piston Stab Overdrive', and so on through eighteen one-appearance labels. Read as a whole, the tracklist doesn't portray a sound so much as a language with twenty-five accents — and it makes clear which one is spoken loudest.
