Bonsai delivers Xukulem: a ceremonial descent into dark psytrance
Guatemalan project Bonsai returns with Xukulem, a seven-track album that cements their standing at the forefront of Latin American dark psytrance. The title, drawn from the Tzʼutujil Mayan language, sets the spiritual and geographical tone for a work that weaves forest psy architecture with ritualistic elements rooted in Mesoamerican traditions.
The album opens with Dark Sabroson (9:18), immediately establishing the mood: dense modulation layers, hypnotic basslines and percussion that bridges the nocturnal dancefloor with ancestral ceremony. Kali Serenade (11:11) escalates the tension through melodic textures that oscillate between dissonance and resolution, while Los Guardianes Invisibles (14:00) stands as the album's centrepiece — fourteen minutes of gradual construction culminating in a drop that masterfully integrates processed indigenous samples.
Mago Lago and Tzʼutujil sustain momentum through the album's core, holding BPMs between 145 and 148 with controlled, precise energy. The collaborations seal the record with distinction: Nirvana Shatakam with Karmakox delivers a more meditative and expansive approach, while Di em ti featuring Mycoologix introduces additional psychedelic strata that bring the journey to a powerful close.
