Closing a 35-track compilation with a tune called 'Send Me Your Demos' —credited to one Big Joke— is a statement of intent: Slacker 85 sees itself less as a closed club than as an open door. The label Seth Troxler founded in 2023, with previous output from Danny Daze, Jackmaster and Kenny Summit according to Resident Advisor, frames 'He Ain't Here' as more than a catalogue: «this compilation is protest—from fight songs to moments of joy», says Troxler, signing off with a «welcome to our dysfunctional family».
The tracklist backs him up. Everything is tagged tech house, yet the actual range runs from the 67 BPM of Dan Ward's 'Orisha' —a strange, beautiful outlier in the middle of the record— to the 132 of Skream's remix of Lady Jane Beach's 'Binman'. Maher Daniel's eleven-minute 'Grit', by far the longest cut, sits alongside lean pieces like 'Keikai Hustlin', done and dusted in under five.
Dysfunctional family, tidy house
The recognisable names work as anchors rather than bait. Marc Houle and Audion contribute exclusive cuts, Mathew Jonson drops 'I Got You' at 130, Hiroko Yamamura shares 'Life Story' with Sian and Idoru, and Troxler himself appears alongside Luna on 'CircoLoco'. But the bulk of the record rests on less familiar aliases —Sindicato Del Baile, Groovy Loff, TB-203, aryeh (FR)— and that is where the label's line becomes legible: veterans and newcomers on equal footing, no billing hierarchy.
The home stretch captures the sequencing logic: four consecutive cuts at 120 BPM —Jonny Rock, Dr Dunks, Krystal Klear and the aforementioned Big Joke— deliberately cooling the room before the lights go out. A label barely three years old that arranges 35 tracks like someone programming a full night clearly knows what kind of house it is building.
