'Resonate (Gravity Holds Me)' opens in B major, and its parenthetical reads like a mission statement for the whole record: euphoria, yes, but with gravity pulling downward. Jessica Joy kicks off a parade of ten artists across ten cuts, and ZEFA picks up the baton with 'Nobody's There', jumping to E major without dropping the pulse. These are the only two tracks tagged at 130-131 BPM; from the third cut onward the metadata settles into 86-88 —drum & bass's usual half-time reading— and the compilation finds its cruising speed.
That third cut is called, ironically or not, 'Beginning': Siderox turns in the longest track of the set (3:38) and the one that truly lays the groundwork. From there the record walks a remarkably narrow harmonic corridor: F major and F minor trade places across DVRSTY's 'Don't Go' —the shortest cut at 2:44—, UTCA's 'My World' and Blueform's 'Stay', and that tonal proximity turns the middle stretch into one long gesture, more continuous flow than a stack of singles. 'Losing My Mind' by LUNAS and CHOPPAZ, the only collaboration here, lands past the halfway mark as a small social milestone on a record of solo names.
The ending dims the lights: Woder's 'Vibrate' returns to the E major ZEFA left behind before Wolters' 'Deep End' finishes the journey in Gb minor, saving the darkest title for last. No fireworks climax; a controlled descent instead.
The format —no name repeated, vignettes of around three minutes— fits the house: Riot Records, the Coventry label run by Georgie Riot, one of the few in British drum & bass with a woman at the helm, as UKF underlined in its label spotlight, and picked as Beatport's Hype Label of the Month in March 2023. Its stated rule could not be simpler: "if it slaps, it slaps". 'Euphoria: Vol 1' applies it in sequence, from gravity all the way down to the deep end.
