'Jungle 160' runs 5:45, the longest track on this Year Three, and its metadata reads 80 BPM. That's an old trick in jungle: tracks get logged at half their real pulse, so 80 doubled gives you the 160 the title is naming, the accelerated breakbeat tempo that built the genre in the nineties. The one pulling that technical joke is FX909, who also owns the label: Jungle Science is a Paris-based offshoot of FX909 Music, and this compilation reads less like an open call and more like an annual roll call of the roster. Of nineteen tracks, eleven carry his signature, solo or alongside Sweetbread Junior on 'Night Runner', the only track with two names on the credits and further proof of how much this Year Three stays in-house.
The rest of the cast is deliberately tight. 3rd Sh4de contributes five cuts, and the most telling is 'Future', the slowest tag in the set at 66 BPM (132 doubled), its mood drifting away from the standard roller toward something suspended, almost ambient before the break kicks in. Johnny B supplies three tracks, and on 'Warrior' and 'My Sound', both past the five-minute mark, you hear the producer with the longest résumé of the three, laying basslines that breathe more than FX909's.
The closer breaks the rule that held the record together. 'Out Of Control' is tagged at 109 BPM, the highest number across all nineteen tracks and well above the tight 84-to-88 pocket the rest of the tracklist lives in, with 'Future' as the sole low outlier at 66. After eighteen tracks anchored to that steady pulse, the final jump reads like an exit from the mold, a reminder that Jungle Science's crew doesn't need to sit on one side of the tempo to still sound like itself.
