Woozy drops willow_pitch WZY5.5: deep dispatches from the bass underground
UK imprint Woozy returns with the fifth instalment of its willow_pitch compilation series, and once again the label demonstrates a rare editorial clarity: twelve artists, twelve distinct voices, and a shared commitment to exploring the darker, more textural edges of bass music. This is not a release built for instant gratification — it rewards patience and careful listening.
Talker opens proceedings with Harmonium, a measured deep dubstep cut at 140 BPM in B minor that immediately sets the mood: slow-burning, spatial, deliberate. ARtroniks mirrors that tempo with Mecha, also at 140 in A minor, but with a more mechanised and percussive approach that gives the 140 section of this comp a genuine sense of contrast.
The Bass/Club contingent is where the energy peaks. Bambi's Lotus Glow hits at 163 BPM in F major, injecting a rare brightness into the mix, while Aawadh's Weight Of Light operates at 160 BPM with a more expansive and rolling feel. SSSLIP's Rest up Ron keeps the pace but leans harder into synthetic textures and clinical precision.
At the slower end, Dyslecta's Basalisk and Old Man Crane's Kelo Dub hover around 68–69 BPM, weaponising space and restraint to genuinely unsettling effect. Kincaid brings warmth with Together (99 BPM, D major), and softi closes the introspective arc with Insomnia — six hypnotic minutes at 90 BPM in G major that feel like the compilation exhaling.
